Beverly Eddy is an early childhood educator with over 35 years of experience. Her introduction to early childhood education began with her job as a counselor with a summer program in Washington, DC. Since then Beverly has forged a path enriching the minds of children throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Early in her career, Beverly served as the curriculum coordinator at Takoma Park Child Development Center, where she designed and implemented the curriculum for approximately 150 children. Beverly would go on to work at Shabach! Christian Academy of the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, where she was named teacher of the year in 2001. She later served as the assistant director for Bible Babies Child Development Center of the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square from 2002 to 2009 and the Director for Ideal Childcare center from 2010 through 2013.
In February 2013, stepping out on faith, Beverly opened her own Christian childcare center, Mighty Minds Enrichment Center, located at 7800 Central Avenue inside the Prince George’s Church of Christ. In addition to basic educational fundamentals, children learn skills in sign language, dance, soccer, the books of the bible, prayers and scriptures. Mighty Minds also provides STEM classes for elementary school students. More than just a daycare center, Mighty Minds aims to build community relationships between the children of the center and the surrounding community. To that end Beverly, as the owner and director, has structured the curriculum of Mighty Minds to ensure that there is an ongoing community engagement component. A few of the outreach and community activities Mighty Minds engages in are; Valentines for Veterans, an initiative where the children work together to write cards and letters to community Veterans to remind them that they are loved; Read Across America, which involves donating books to kids in need to ensure that every child has access to reading material; food and clothing drives for local shelters, and community partnerships with the local police and fire departments who to teach the kids and families about safety. During the summer months of June, July and August Mighty Minds sponsors the KEYS program, offering employment opportunities for underprivileged high school students who are interested in a career in early childhood education. Each year in August Mighty Minds hosts a uniform closet, where parents in need can obtain uniforms for their children for the upcoming school year. In November, Mighty Minds donates food baskets to feed families in need and in December, Mighty Minds sponsors an angel tree, an initiative where clothing and toys are collected to gift to four to six families part of the Mighty Minds community. Also, each month, Mighty Minds brings in a minority owned credit union, DC Teacher’s Federal Credit Union, for the children to learn about banking, financial literacy, and the importance of saving money.
While Beverly is at the helm of Mighty Minds Enrichment Center and coordinates all the community initiatives, she also engages in community involvement outside of the classroom. She has participated in 80 hours of community service helping children with special needs, taught as a lead instructor at multiple early childhood conferences throughout Maryland and advocated for the adoption of foster children by their foster parent. Recently, Beverly lent her voice to the 2019 Evening for Children’s Advocacy in Annapolis, where she spoke with legislators and influential members of the educational community about the importance of early childhood education.
Beverly’s accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. In 2014 she and Mighty Minds received the rising star award, an honor that recognizes excellence in early childhood education throughout Prince George’s County Maryland.
While the accolades, awards, and recognition are greatly appreciated, Beverly continues to stand strong on her goal, building mighty minds, and empowering children from a young age to achieve a life of success by providing high quality early childhood education.
